Do you have a favorite type of book, either fiction or nonfiction? Are you thinking about branching out and enjoying a new genre? If so, a list of book types or genres can help
Two Different Types of Books
Most readers already understand that all books are classified as either fiction or nonfiction. Within these two types of books, you’ll find dozens of more specific types, or genres.
Nonfiction Books
Nonfiction books contain factual information, such as biographies and history books.
Examples of nonfiction books include textbooks and guides.
Most biographies are nonfiction. We say "most" biographies, because a biography of a fictional character is really a fictional book.
The Diary of Anne Frank is nonfiction and a journal, making it a nonfiction journal. Most dictionaries and encyclopedias are nonfiction because they contain facts about words. Travel books such as an atlas are nonfiction. How to books that teach real skills,Like the classic Betty Crocker Cookbook are considered factual – aka non-fiction.
Fiction Books
Fiction books contain a story that the author made up, such as romance or children's books. The most commonly read works are works of fiction. Perhaps some of their elements are based on hints of truth, but they have been elaborated, fabricated, and used to embellish into a new story. Some examples of classic fiction books are as follows:
The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway
To Kill A Mockingbird by HarperLee
Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
If there were a contest to determine whether there were more fiction or non-fiction books, fiction would win hands down. There are way more fiction books than non-fiction. Our culture is one of stories and fictional stories have been used to pass down knowledge and have helped early mankind to make sense of the world. We no longer use fiction to pass on information as much, but we do use it for entertainment. Many people like the idea of escaping into a story.
Every typical library has a large fiction section, most often larger than the non-fiction section. Fiction sells more so countless authors write fiction to try to tap into such a huge market. Nobody can give actual numbers but there are definitely more fiction novels written every year than non-fiction. One current source guestimates that there are 129,864,880 books fiction books in the world. My guesstimate is that 22% of all books are non-fiction. So that would give us about 29 million non-fiction books.
List of typical book genres
The two types of books can be further divided into many different subtypes, called genres. I like to call them categories.
